Our hands-down favorite beaches to go to in SW Florida are on Sanibel & Captiva Islands. For a $6 toll to get on the island and a buck an hour for parking, one can enjoy a handful of public beaches that are slightly different. Our favorite beach was on Sanibel, called Blind Pass. It must be the best place to collect seashells in the United States.
I’m not even exaggerating.
We brought home amazing, amazing shells.
I am now a shell hoarder.
These are not your garden variety clam shells. Oh no. Florida Fighter Conch, Lightening Whelk, Cockle, Tulip, Olive and Jingle shells are just a sample of some of the shells we collected there.
See what I mean? This is just a sampling of the shells I have around my house from Blind Pass.

I have heard that before about Sanibel. I have lived in Florida my whole life and never been there!

Beautiful shells. I love how you used them in your potted plants…what a clever use! The iridescent one in the first picture is gorgeous.

My most treasured shells are from Sanibel and Bokeelia Island. I found a perfect starfish one morning on the beach in Sanibel that I have displayed, along with others very similar to yours.
It’s an amazing place for shells, for sure! And the sunsets are breathtaking!

Those shells are amazing! It’s okay to be a shell hoarder when they look that pretty! My mom has these really tall vases, round, and they are filled with shells of all kinds and they are like 3 feet tall, they look very cool!!

What a beautiful collection… I never thought to use shells on the plants. Great idea.
Sanibel and Captiva Islands are some of the best beaches in Florida. We vacation there every summer and my girls always look forward to it. We’ve collected some of the very same shells there. Glad you enjoyed yourselves.

The thing I can’t figure out is how there are still such plentiful shells there year after year after year. I’ve been going there since I was a little bitty thing and it’s never changed!

I’m a shell hoarder, too. This is one of the passions I love sharing with my kids. Searching the beach for booty is just fantastic. Can’t wait to see what we bring back from Turks and Caicos after spring break!

oh, I remember this well from returning from our trip to the Outer Banks last summer – I still have all the shells in the garage (I’m mean and wouldn’t let the chidren bring them into the house)

I love Sanibel – But I already told you that. I love that when you bring home shells from a trip you are almost instantly transported back to your vacation when you see them, touch them. I love shells!!

It’s very rare to find much more than clam or scallop shells in NJ… maybe an occassional conch.
(of course, now that I’m in PA, we find cow pies instead. haha

We’re headed to Amelia Island for spring break, I hope the shells are as beautiful in the NorthEast of Florida as they are in the SW! Great pictures and great memories Angie. Thanks for sharing.
WHAT??? They LET you take them home? CA. is LAME. The beach we went to had a million signs telling you not to take their LAME sea shells home. Kate spent the whole afternoon collecting these pathetic little clam shells only to be told she couldn’t take them with her.
