Wordful Wednesday-The Best Pet?

by Angie on July 6, 2010

Welcome to Wordful Wednesday……for more information, see “WW” in  my handy dandy tabber box in my right side bar.

My kids have been asking me for a puppy for ages. And keep getting shot down. So, when they were introduced to the idea of a snake as a pet, they were excited. They listed all the perks:

  1. No poop to clean up.
  2. Hardly ever eats.
  3. Doesn’t shed…..well except for once a year…..or whenever it is that they shed.
  4. Doesn’t make noise.
  5. Doesn’t stink.
  6. Is fun to hold.

I was totally almost sold.  Until I remembered.

I hate snakes.

Really hate them.

Or, to be more precise, am incredibly afraid of them.

Sorry kids.

I hate snakes too. my cousin had some growing up –there is smell with them too.

2 Scary Mommy July 6, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I hate snakes. And gerbils. And mice. And everything else my kids are begging me for. Isn’t having 5 kids kind of like having pets, anyway?

3 Mrs. Cox July 6, 2010 at 4:36 pm

LOL Um yeah. That won’t be a pet I’ll give a thumbs up to either.

4 Jen July 6, 2010 at 4:43 pm

The list of perks is almost convincing…but there’s no way I could handle one in the house either!

You should tell them that all the bugs and creepy crawlies outside are their pets. Encourage them to find them all and name them. That way, they get their pet, and you get them out of your hair for a few hours.

14 aimee July 6, 2010 at 6:31 pm

I don’t mind snakes, but I DON’T do spiders!!

15 Jennifer July 6, 2010 at 6:36 pm

NOTHING from the reptile family is allowed any where near my house. I’m terrified of all of that kind of stuff. Ugh. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it. Animals that kill those kinds of things (cat, mongoose… can you have a mongoose for a pet like in Riki Tiki Tavi?) are totally on the thumbs up list… as long as they stay outside.

16 Maggie July 6, 2010 at 6:36 pm

I don’t think I would be able to have snakes – they freak me out.

Yep, the week after I post about how happy they made me and how cute they are and how proud I am that we have kept them alive so long they up and die. Just go for a pet free home. That’s what we’re gonna do.

My kids are desperate for a pet but I can’t even stand to look at a snake on t.v. I have seen a real snake in person twice and it was tramatic. YIKES!!! I haven’t figured out the perfect pet yet so we remain without.

I used to babysit some boys who had a pet snake. It got lost ALL THE TIME! I was so freaked whenever the mom would tell me that it was on the loose! They fed it baby mice, it was so gross to watch. I can’t say that I was sad to hear that it met a horrible fate when it decided to hide inside the washing machine. I will NEVER let my boys get one of those things, I would die first, lol!

63 Dominique @Dominique's Desk July 7, 2010 at 1:17 am

We got an aquarium and some fishes for the boys after they kept on pestering for a pet..so far they are still fascinated by their fishes.

Eeeeekkk!!! I’m SUPER scared of snakes too. Thank God my kids aren’t too fond of them either. Although I might have to keep an eye on the oldest one to make sure he knows for sure that he can’t bring ANY creepy crawlies up in here. lol.

65 Stacey July 7, 2010 at 2:36 am

My kids tried to convince me that a snake was a good pet too. I told them they could have the one the caught from the yard…OUTSIDE! And lucky for me, it escaped, although that means it’s somewhere in the yard. I’m not sure what’s worse.

66 cat@juggling act July 7, 2010 at 2:44 am

67 Run DMT July 7, 2010 at 3:20 am

I have vetoed all and any pets. Nada. Not one. Because I know I’ll get stuck with taking care of it.

Your kids did build a pretty good case for a snake, though. I think snakes are really cool. My oldest even tried to convince me to get her a pet snake until she found out that she would have to feed it live food, like mice. She ruled that pet out on her own. ;-)

Ah yeah…I mean no…Whatever happened to wanting gold fish? I know they die days after brining them home, but at least it gives the children a chance to experience caring for and owning a pet. I know for sure, like you, there will be NO pet snakes (mice, lizards, or anything else that crawls – drags its body across the floor) living inside our home.

80 Martianne July 7, 2010 at 6:53 am

I just found your site. Fun! I am happy to join in… And snakes? MY kids were thrilled to touch one during animal Adventures at our library just last night. After becoming a parent, I’ve totally lost interest in pets. We have a cat, but I’m so ready for him to well, head to kitty heaven. (I feel so bad saying that!). It’s enough work to take care of a kid let alone scoop litter boxes and remember to feed the cat. I feel bad, but I think it will be many years until we get another pet. Though child whining can wear a parent down.
