I haven’t felt so young, EVER..…….as I did when I stood amongst thousands-of-year-old trees in the Redwood Forest.
We took a steam train ride through the trees, and sadly, the kids weren’t particularly impressed. The train didn’t move very quickly and the trees, well, they didn’t move.
We did have some excitement in our caboose though, which made it all worthwhile.
This man went a little crazy on board and started using all manner of profanity. He was speaking in Spanish so I’m not sure about everything he said, but I know some of the words, and they are not said to compliment someone. Oh, and after his tirade of naughty words? He then grabbed this other man and tried to pull him out of his wheel chair and off the train. In the end, there was not just one lunatic screaming, but two. We were mesmerized.
As a family, we decided we were thankful for the inappropriate outbursts though, because, why would we remember something as beautiful as a train ride through the Redwood Forest without added drama?

My friend took me to the Redwood Forest when I was visiting and being there amidst those tall, tall trees just felt so humbling. I’d love to take my kids back there some day.

WOW, that is quite the experience. At least it’s memorable.
We loved the Redwoods when we went out a few years ago… though we missed out on the exciting train ride!!!

What an exciting train ride. I’ve done that ride and I had a great time. I was about 13 years old at the time but I was still impressed and there were no raving lunatics aboard! And those redwoods are amazing.

My husband’s parents took him and his two brothers to the Redwood Forest and it has always been his dream to take our children too. I think we are a lot like you guys, wanting to get our kids out into nature to apprieciate the wonderful sites our great country has to offer.
So what age is best? How old do you think they would have to be to “get it” and be excited?

Those majestic trees move to tears. They are so huge. So wise. So beautiful.
But I don’t think my kids would get it yet either. My husband keeps suggesting we do a trip to Yellowstone and I’m worried they won’t appreciate it.

The Redwoods are so cool! I remember that there used to be this ginormous tree that a car could drive through the trunk was that thick. All though, I could be remembering incorrectly because I remember seeing those pics as a little girl.

I know hubby & I both would of enjoyed the steam train ride! Our kids enjoyed it when they went on a small one that went around the Milwaukee county zoo.
I sure hope someone intervened and stopped that crazy dude!

Oh that’s a shame that you had to deal with that at such a happy & beautiful moment in your trip…always something for sure. I remember visiting Baltimore Harbor when we were little and there was a angry swearing homeless man chasing us for spare change – we still talk about that one!

Too bad I wasn’t on the train with you, living in Texas comes with many fringe benefits – thorough knowledge of rapid Spanish vulgarity is just one. Out of a wheelchair? Zoweee.

I don’t think it’s the same place, but we took a trip out to Sequoia National Park a couple of years ago and it was a hit with the whole family. Mason has been itching to go camping again ever since. Those giant trees are just awe-inspiring.

I love the redwoods! I grew up near them in the Bay Area, so I have a special place in my heart for them! They really are awe inspiring. The redwood forest makes me feel as if I am standing in a cathedral…the peace and majesty have a stillness that doesn’t seem to belong to our time.

we drove the ENTIRE length of california, and those amazing redwoods were certainly a highlight. not a camera lens big enough to get the whole thing in!

As native Californians, we have taken that train ride many times with family and friends. It was always so peaceful and relaxing. We never had any drama. Maybe we need to take it again.
