Before I got married, I had a bridal shower. Or two.
At both showers the hostesses asked the guests to write down pieces of advice to help me on my newest path in life.
I wish I still had the pages handy so I could write down verbatim what they said. But, they contained advice like:
“Never go to bed angry at your spouse.”
“Always keep open lines of communication.”
“When the children come, and they will, remember to make time to make your husband feel special and loved too.”
“Schedule a date night every week if possible.”
And then my aunt wrote:
“Open your new bars of soap and allow the air to make them hard. They last much longer that way”.
I thought it was hilarious. Here everyone else gave me relationship advice and after like 30 years of marriage all my aunt advised me to do was leave soap out to get hard in order to prolong it’s life?
Twelve years into my marriage I finally starting following her advice, and guess what?
Joke’s on me.
It TOTALLY works.
Great advice from some one who knows stuff.
You should try it. I’m almost at that point in my life where people actually think I know stuff too.
{If you want to learn stuff from someone who knows stuff about dating, marriage, pregnancy and motherhood, go to the Casa de Dummies. Like, right now. Be prepared to laugh. You can thank me later.}

Too bad you didn’t save all those papers, but at least you remembered the most important one about the soap! I’ll share that tid-bit in my Friday “Things I Learned This Week” post with a link back here at http://www.zemeks.blogspot.com.
Visiting from Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop. I did this prompt too at http://karenzemek.blogspot.com/2010/01/best-advice-i-ever-got-from-my-dad.html

Nice! Now we can go back to using bars of soap. We chucked ‘em and went to liquid because they were always a goopy, disgusting mess. And, if you want more marriage advice I put some on my blog today, Dumb Mom style (aka awesomely bad, unlikely to work, but fun to read style)! XOXO
haha! I love it! And I hate the “don’t go to bed angry” line. My husband lives by this and it can get pretty annoying…especially when I’m tired! I want to fall asleep! We can fight in the morning, can’t we?!?
*came over from mama kat’s workshop**
My mom’s been unwrapping her soap for decades.
Funny that was one piece of advice you remembered.
Do you follow any of the other advice you received?
That is hilarious!!
i will have to try that!

When I got married, my favorite advice came from a lady in my hometown. She was about 89 at the time. She said “I know that kids your age are all into being open about stuff…” (which made me think this might be bedroom advice at first) and then she said “but just remember not to poop in front of him. It’s just not ladylike. I was married for 52 years and my husband never knew when I pooped.”
I thought I was going to die.
Funniest advice EVER.
Now there’s some useful advice!

lol your silly
I have found that the most useful advice AND the most useful gifts I got for my wedding I did not appreciate until much later. Luckily the good advice still applies, unfortunately I returned so many things I thought I’d never need that I really wish I had now!
I have never heard of that! We always use liquid soap, anyway.
This was cute! Really cute!!

Who knew?? We have SUCH issues in this house with soap disaperaing so quickly!!
I didn’t know that about soap. hmmmm. I’ll have to give it a try. And that was a woman that new the value of a good piece of advice.
Funny. I will have to try that. My hubby is the only one who uses bar soap but it sure does go fast. I will definitely be trying that. Anyway to save a buck, specially since my hubby only uses expensive conditioning soap LOL.

Love it! I wish someone had done this for me at my bridal shower.
Funny how practical advice is often overlooked, but may actually be more wise than the others.
Many of the others I have heard, but leaving the soap opened is a new one. Now I’ll have to try it.
Thanks for sharing this unique advice,

Ok, going to have to try that one now.
LOL. I think mom was confused about what type of advice she was supposed to be giving, or maybe, she just thought you didn’t need any more advice on marriage!
I’ve been doing the soap thing for years, and it does work. Thanks Mom.
Glad to see you writing a bit more!
OMG, that is the silliest thing I’ve heard in a while. And you’re saying it actually works? Have you done a scientific experiment with 2 different bars of soap? And how long do you keep it unwrapped before using it? Holy crap, I can’t even believe i’m asking these questions.

How funny! I haven’t used bar soap in years, but CandyMan still does. Maybe I should try it for him.
Oh man… after being with my hubby for 19 years… I fear I may hand someone advice like that too, at a shower… how jaded I’ve become!!!

Interesting! And how wonderful to give that piece of advice! She probably figured you’ll make your own mistakes along the way…but soap isn’t cheap. lol.

that’s awesome
i’m totally going to try it!
good advice, love the soap one, LOL!
I asked people to leave me advice at my baby shower, and I got some great stuff! Except for my father in law, who simply wrote “dirt in, dirt out.” When my husband and his sister were growing up, they were constantly doing landscaping projects because my FiL thought hard work was a way to keep them out of trouble. I guess that’s one theory…haha!

Oh.
My.
Gosh.
Okay, that is so freaking funny… and good to know!
I do love a good, big hunkin’ bar of soap though. They skeeve the Mr., but when I use them I feel very Martha Stewart-ish.
Ha! I learn something everyday! I’ll try it!

PRICELESS! I remember when we had our “classes” with the minister pre-marriage the thing that really stuck with me was when he said, “I want you to think about the little things that annoy you about each other. Now, instead of assuming they’ll ‘go away’ once you’re married, imagine those traits multiplied 10x. THAT is how marriage is. If you think those aspects are ‘deal-able’—you have my blessings.” 14 years later, I appreciate my husband’s snoring and little jabs that set me straight now more than ever!
Great post, Angie!

That’s why years ago you used to see baskets of soap on the counter or back of toilet tank
I love practical advise.
Thanks for stopping by my blog
Oh my gosh that is so funny! I love your aunt, she sounds like someone I’d like to meet. LOL
I have an “advice” book from my bridal shower and later a baby shower. I still like to go back and read from it – some of the same advice is in mine like “don’t go to bed angry”. However, I think your aunt’s takes the cake!

At least your aunt didn’t talk about leaving something else out to air so it’ll get hard. A*W*K*W*A*R*D…. lol
Too funny! I wish I kept them too. After almost 22 years of marriage I still feel like I’m clueless! Have a wonderful weekend!

And I bet you always remembered her advice and forgot the rest. I’m so going to try this!
